One of the most important aspects of ageing, is the effect of this on our skin quality. For years there has been focus, discussion, opinion and promotion of dermal fillers and botulinum toxins. But the largest organ in the body-the skin-has often been overlooked.
Not any more.
As we age, our skin loses collagen and the collagen it does have is less organised and efficient. Our dermal layer can become thinner, the barrier function of our skin can become disrupted leading to dryness, sensitivity and redness. The “inflammaging” processes can play a role in creating dull, tired and crepey skin with a loss of elasticity and glow. Darker circles can appear around the eyes and fine lines and wrinkles emerge more than before. Pigmentation also can start to unevenly present along with textural concerns.
So it’s important when taking a holistic approach to aesthetics that we don’t overlook the icing on the cake. Skin-first, regenerative aesthetics is about more than anti wrinkle treatments and lip volume (as wonderful as they are).
With a seemingly overwhelming number of treatments available though, how might one start? Well, these are my favourite recommendations. Come and see us in clinic at DRS Newcastle and we can delve deeper into the bespoke option for you.
SPF 50, broad spectrum
All year round, face, neck and backs of hands. A standalone product is necessary-not just within a cosmetic.
Celora Vita
This unique blend of 9 amino acids and hyaluronic acid within a “protein facial” gives a wonderful glow to the skin from the hyaluronic hydration followed by skin biorestoration through the replenishment of amino acids (the building blocks of collagen) to where it’s needed most. Tiny injections under the skin on the face and around the eyes, neck or décolletage provide the necessary materials to boost our natural collagen. Not an immediate fix, but an important one.
Polynucleotides (Plinest)
At a cellular level, the famous “salmon sperm facial” helps to regenerate the skin stimulating fibroblast activity to produce collagen and elastin. It works synergistically with Celora Vita and combining the two leads to improved outcomes. A celebrity and fan favourite and for good reason. It’s particularly a super choice for the delicate eye area but suitable for use anywhere on the body.
Skinvive
Fresh from being awarded Injectable Product of the Year 2026 by Woman and Home, Juvederm’s signature injectable skin hydrator sits within a unique space in aesthetic medicine. Proven to last for up to 9 months, tiny aliquots of a hydrating filler are injected under the skin to draw in hydration and upregulate Aquaporin 3. This improves both skin hydration and can reduce trans epidermal water loss: helping resilience and boosting the skin glow.
Zo and Obagi Skincare
For every in clinic treatment, there can be 30, 60 or even 90 home based routines. With the tendency for ageing skin to become less resilient and more reactive, quality formulations become more important than ever. So many times patients have said “I used to tolerate this really well but now it just doesn’t suit me”. OBAGI have been at the forefront of skincare for 30 years. Dr Obagi’s newest range, Zo Skin Health, has built upon that foundation and offers additional products to suit a range of problems and skin types. Happy skin = glowing skin and now is the right time to invest in products that provide the results they say they will.
Retinoids and vitamin C
The hero skin products that should form part of almost every patient’s skin regime.
Retinoids are the gold standard in increasing cell turnover, improving dermal thickness, reducing TEWL and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Ageing backwards is possible! Tolerance is improved with patience and the correct formulation which is an important part of our discussion.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant-mopping up free radicals and preventing further skin damage. It can also help reduce pigmentation and uneven skin tone and texture but can be tricky to find the right formulation and strength as it’s quite a temperamental product. We have some super options that perform extremely well.
SkinPen Microneedling
Controlled microtrauma of the skin with tiny needles into the dermis leading to collagen stimulation and the healing cascade has long been a proven treatment not just for skin health and collagen production but for scarring and some types of pigmentation too. It’s a great add on to an existing regime and can increase collagen by 400% after a completed course. SkinPen is widely considered the Gold Standard device; it was the first FDA regulated pen and remains the most widely used by US physicians and plastic surgeons.
So it’s not a one size fits all approach. It’s important to get the evidence based fundamentals in place and then build on that foundation to obtain the best results. Gone are the days of overwhelming, heavily marketed beauty halls and let’s welcome in the new era of regenerative treatments.
We’d love to see you.
