Anti-Wrinkle Injections in Jesmond, Newcastle
What Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
At Dr Fiona Steedman Aesthetics, anti-wrinkle injections are used to gently soften lines and give the face a more relaxed, refreshed appearance, without surgery or lengthy recovery.
The treatment uses a purified protein known as botulinum toxin type A, often recognised under brand names such as Botox. It works by temporarily reducing the activity of selected facial muscles. By limiting how strongly these muscles contract, the skin above them can settle and smooth out, helping to soften existing lines and slow the formation of deeper ones.
Although many people seek treatment for areas like the forehead or between the brows, anti-wrinkle injections can be used in a wider range of ways. They are often used to create better facial balance, subtly refine features, and address concerns such as excessive sweating.
Appointments are straightforward and typically take only a short time to complete. There is little disruption to your day, and results appear gradually, leaving you looking fresher while still completely natural. When carried out by a qualified medical practitioner, this treatment is both safe and reliable, with consistently high levels of patient satisfaction.
Common Treatment Areas & Uses
Here are many of the areas and indications I offer in my clinic, with a brief explanation of how neurotoxin can help:
Area / Indication | What Is Treated & Why |
Frown lines / Glabellar “11s” | Vertical lines between the eyebrows, arising from repeated contraction of the corrugator / procerus muscles. |
Forehead (horizontal lines) | Lines that run across the forehead when you raise your brows; relaxing frontalis helps soften these. |
Crow’s feet (around the eyes) | Lateral orbital lines that appear when you smile or squint — treatment softens these dynamic lines. |
Jawline slimming / masseter reduction | In cases where the masseter (chewing) muscle is hypertrophic (overdeveloped), weakening it slightly can slim the lower face and reduce jaw width. |
Nefertiti / Neck lift (platysma band relaxation) | The platysma muscle (running from jaw to neck) can pull downward. Relaxing parts of it can help smooth neck bands and improve lower face–neck contour (a non-surgical “lift”). |
DAO (Depressor Anguli Oris) “grinch” / downturned mouth | The DAO muscle pulls down the corners of the mouth. Weakening it lightly lifts the mouth corners and counters a gloomy or sad resting expression. |
Pebble / dimpled chin (“orange peel” chin) | Excessive or uneven contraction of the mentalis muscle can give a dimpled or pebbly texture; relaxing it smooths the surface. |
Nasalis / nasal lines / “bunny lines” | Lines on or beside the nose when you scrunch or smile; these can be softened by carefully placed injections. |
Excess sweating (hyperhidrosis) | In areas such as the underarms (axilla), neurotoxin can block the nerves that stimulate sweat glands, reducing sweating. |

Procedure: What Happens During Treatment?
Here’s a step-by-step overview of how I perform anti-wrinkle injections in my clinic:
Consultation & Assessment
Your appointment with Dr Fiona Steedman begins with a detailed consultation to fully understand your goals and expectations. This includes reviewing your medical history, discussing any previous treatments, and, where helpful, assessing photographs. Dr Fiona Steedman will carry out a thorough facial analysis, looking at muscle movement, symmetry, and skin quality to create a treatment plan that is completely tailored to you.
Marking & Preparation
Before treatment, Dr Fiona Steedman carefully maps out and marks the precise injection points to ensure accuracy and balance. The skin is then thoroughly cleansed and prepared to maintain a safe, clinical environment.
Anaesthesia / Comfort Measures
Most patients find that numbing cream isn’t needed. The needles used are extremely fine, and any discomfort is typically minimal and brief, making the treatment very well tolerated.
Injection
A purified form of botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox) is administered using a fine needle into carefully selected muscles, or just beneath the skin for concerns such as excessive sweating. Dr Fiona Steedman precisely controls the number of injection points and the amount used, based on your muscle strength, natural asymmetry, and desired outcome.
Immediate Post-Injection Care
Following treatment, gentle pressure may be applied if required. Dr Fiona Steedman will advise you to remain upright for a few hours and to avoid strenuous exercise, heat exposure (such as saunas), and excessive facial rubbing for the next 24 hours to support optimal results.
The entire procedure is typically short : generally 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how many areas are being treated.
Downtime, Risks & Side Effects
Downtime / Recovery
- Minimal to none – most patients treated by Dr Fiona Steedman are able to leave the clinic and carry on with their normal day
- It’s common to notice slight redness, tiny injection marks, or mild swelling/bruising at the treatment sites for 1–2 days
- Dr Fiona Steedman will advise avoiding strenuous exercise, heat exposure (such as saunas or hot yoga), alcohol, and facial massage for 24–48 hours to reduce the risk of product spreading beyond the intended area
Possible Side Effects & Risks
Although uncommon when treatment is carried out by an experienced practitioner such as Dr Fiona Steedman, potential side effects can include:
- Mild bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness where injections were placed
- Temporary unevenness if the product settles differently across muscles
- Mild headache shortly after treatment
- Slight weakness in nearby muscles (for example, a temporary drooping of the eyelid or brow)
- Over-relaxation of muscles, which can lead to a less natural or “frozen” look if too much product is used
- With certain neck treatments, there is a very small risk of temporary swallowing difficulty or neck weakness if injections are not precisely placed
- A rare risk of infection or allergic reaction
