Treating Pebbled Chin (Chin Dimpling)
What is a Pebbled Chin?
Have you noticed a “cobblestone,” “orange-peel,” or dimpled texture on your chin- especially when talking, smiling or puckering? This is often referred to as pebbled chin, and arises from overactivity of the mentalis muscle (the small muscle at the front of the chin). Over time, repeated contraction of this muscle causes indentations, rippling or texture in the overlying skin that can persist even at rest.
A pebbled chin is entirely normal and common. Many people become increasingly self-conscious about it, particularly in photos or under close scrutiny, and seek aesthetic refinement to restore a smoother chin surface.
Why Does It Happen?
- Muscle hyperactivity -when the mentalis muscle contracts repeatedly, it tugs on the skin and creates dimples or rippling
- Loss of skin elasticity or volume over time-the skin becomes less resilient to the tugging
- Anatomical factors-variations in muscle size or chin structure can predispose to more pronounced texture
- Ageing changes-as collagen and support decline, even subtle movement can create visible dimpling
Because the underlying cause is dynamic (muscle movement), a treatment that addresses the muscle is often the most effective approach.
Our Approach
At our clinic we combine precision, experience, and a tailored touch to soften chin texture while preserving natural movement. Our strategy typically includes:
Anti-wrinkle Injections-BotoxTM
We inject small, precise amounts of BotoxTM directly into the mentalis muscle to gently ease its contraction. This reduces the pulling motion that causes dimpling, helping the skin above appear smoother and more uniform.
Procedure time: approx. 10-20 minutes
Downtime: minimal
Onset: begins within a few days, full effect by 1-2 weeks
Duration: typically 3-4 months (with potential for longer intervals over time)
Complementary & Alternative Options
While muscle relaxation is often the first-line treatment, in some cases we may recommend combining or considering other modalities, especially when there is static texture (texture even without movement) or additional skin laxity:
- Dermal Fillers: for volume loss or contour adjustment in the chin, used carefully to “fill out” minor depressions and smooth transitions
- Skin Rejuvenation / Collagen Induction: treatments such as SkinPenTM microneedling may help improve texture and skin quality
- Skin Boosters and Polynucleotides: to support deeper hydration and remodeling of skin quality around the chin area
These adjuncts are considered on a case-by-case basis during your consultation, especially if texture is long-standing or combined with other signs of ageing.

Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pebbled chin a sign of ageing?
Not necessarily. While it can become more noticeable with age due to reduced skin elasticity, many people experience chin dimpling from a young age due to muscle activity or facial anatomy. It is very common and completely normal.
How is a pebbled chin treated?
The most effective treatment is a small, carefully placed dose of anti-wrinkle injections into the mentalis muscle. This relaxes the muscle just enough to reduce the pulling action that causes the dimpling, resulting in a smoother chin appearance.
Will my chin look frozen or unnatural?
No. When performed correctly and conservatively, the goal is softening, not freezing. You will still be able to move your chin naturally, speak and smile just without the excessive texture or rippling.
Does the treatment hurt?
Discomfort is minimal. Very fine needles are used, and the injections are quick. Most patients describe the sensation as a small scratch or pinch. A numbing cream can be applied if needed.
How long does the treatment take?
The procedure itself usually takes 10–20 minutes, making it an ideal “lunchtime treatment.”
When will I see results?
You may start to notice improvement within 3-5 days, with full results developing over 10-14 days as the muscle gradually relaxes.
How long do the results last?
Results typically last 3-4 months, although some patients find the effects last longer with repeated treatments as the muscle becomes less overactive over time.
Will I need repeat treatments?
Yes. The effects are temporary, so maintenance treatments are required to sustain results. This will be discussed during your consultation and tailored to your preferences and response.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are usually mild and temporary and may include slight redness, swelling, or a small bruise at the injection site. Rarely, over-treatment can affect lower lip movement-which is why precise dosing and experience are essential.
Is there any downtime?
There is minimal to no downtime. You can return to most normal activities straight away. We recommend avoiding heavy exercise, pressure on the area, or facial treatments for 24-48 hours.
Can pebbled chin be treated with fillers instead?
In some cases, dermal fillers may be used alongside or instead of muscle-relaxing injections -particularly if there is significant volume loss or deeper static indentations. This is assessed on an individual basis during consultation.
