Harnessing Regeneration for Healthy Skin

What is SkinPen Microneedling?

SkinPen® microneedling is a medical-grade, minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure (also known as collagen induction therapy) using a precision pen device to create controlled micro-injuries (microscopic channels) in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger your body’s innate wound-healing cascade, stimulating collagen, elastin and other regenerative mechanisms to remodel and renew the skin-all without heat, chemicals or lasers.

Unlike older rollers or uncertified pens, SkinPen® is designed for precision, safety, and reproducibility, making it a favourite in medical aesthetic practices.

Why SkinPen® Is Superior to Other Microneedling Devices

When selecting a microneedling device, not all are created equal. Below are the key reasons SkinPen® is a smarter choice:

Feature

SkinPen Advantages

Clinical / Practical Significance

Regulatory clearance & safety

SkinPen is the first microneedling device with FDA De Novo / 510(k) clearances (for acne scars and neck wrinkles) and has undergone many validation studies.

Helps reassure safety, quality and standardisation.

Sterile, disposable cartridges

The needle cartridges are single-use and sealed, minimising risk of cross-contamination.

Ensures hygiene, reduces infection risk, and supports clinic protocols.

Needle count, coverage, consistency

SkinPen tips have more needles per tip, enabling faster coverage and greater consistency across the treatment area.

More uniform results, less missed spots, more efficient treatments.

Precise, adjustable depth control

Depth can be finely controlled, allowing us to tailor for different areas (e.g. superficial vs slightly deeper layers) with predictable outcomes.

Greater safety margin near delicate zones; custom targeting of fine lines, pores, scars.

Lower downtime & discomfort

Because it is precise and controlled, patients generally experience milder post-treatment effects vs older, less sophisticated devices.

Faster recovery, fewer adverse events, better patient satisfaction.

Evidence base & clinical validation

Backed by over 90 validation and clinical studies.

Other devices (older pens, rollers, generic pens) often have less rigorous manufacturing standards, less precise depth control, reusable or non-disposable components, and variable needle performance-all of which can lead to inconsistent outcomes or increased side effects.

Treatment Indications: What Can SkinPen® Help With?

SkinPen® microneedling can be used for a broad palette of skin concerns, because its mechanism (controlled microinjury → regeneration) is fundamentally restorative.

Some common indications:

Acne scarring (especially atrophic / depressed scars)

Fine lines and wrinkles, especially superficial to mid-depth

Uneven skin texture, roughness, enlarged pores

Dull skin tone, mild pigmentation irregularities

Stretch marks and body areas of laxity (off-label, as appropriate)

Improving overall skin health, firmness, glow

In some practices, adjunct to other therapies (e.g. growth factors, PRP, exosomes) to enhance regenerative response

Because the process stimulates true tissue remodelling, the improvements are not just superficial masking- they derive from genuine skin regeneration.

Course of Treatment & Scheduling

To maximise outcomes, SkinPen® is not a one-off “magic bullet”-it works cumulatively. A typical treatment protocol might be:

Initial series: 3 to 6 sessions (often 4 is standard), spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart (depending on skin response and area).

Maintenance: After the series, 1 session every 3–12 months (customised) to preserve and build on results

Many patients observe visible improvement after the first session, with progressive gains over subsequent ones.

The regenerative remodelling continues for 3–6 months following the final treatment, as collagen and elastin mature and reorganise.

Your personal protocol will be tailored based on skin quality, age, goals, and how your skin responds.

Use of Local Anaesthesia / Comfort Measures

  • Before starting, the skin is cleaned and topical anaesthetic cream (numbing) is typically applied for ~20–30 minutes to reduce discomfort.

  • Because SkinPen® is precise and minimally traumatic, many patients only feel a light buzzing or tingling sensation, rather than sharp pain.

  • The use of anaesthesia helps improve patient comfort without interfering with the regenerative cascade, as we are not using heat or chemical ablation.

Duration of Treatment (Session Time) & Downtime

Treatment length

A typical microneedling session with SkinPen® (for face or small area) takes around 20 to 40 minutes depending on the area and the settings used.

Including preparation, numbing, mapping, and post-procedure soothing, allow ~60 minutes in the clinic.

Downtime / Post-treatment effects

Effect

Typical Duration / Severity

Redness (erythema), mild swelling

Usually 24–48 hours; sometimes slight lingering “rosy glow” beyond there

Mild pinpoint bleeding or micro-crusting

Very minimal, typically resolves quickly

Slight sensitivity, tightness, warmth

First 1–2 days; manageable with gentle care

Flaking, mild peeling

Rare or minimal; more likely if aggressive settings used

Return to makeup / social exposure

Often by 24–48 hours, provided no complications, and using suitable post-care products

Compared to older, less-precise devices, SkinPen tends to result in shorter, milder downtime.

While most patients resume light activities immediately, we advise avoiding heavy exercise, sun exposure, sauna, and irritating skincare for a few days.

Regenerative Mechanism — What’s Happening Beneath the Surface

The true magic of SkinPen® lies in how it harnesses your body’s innate repair machinery:

  1. Micro-injury / controlled damage

The pen’s fine needles produce microscopic canals and controlled trauma, without ablating large areas.

  1. Inflammatory / healing response

The body responds with a well-orchestrated cascade: blood flow to the area increases, immune cells arrive, clearing debris, stimulating growth factors.

  1. Proliferation phase

Fibroblasts (collagen-producing cells) and vascular endothelial cells migrate, laying down new collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycans, and new microvasculature.

  1. Remodelling / maturation

Over weeks to months, collagen fibers mature, reorganise, and strengthen the dermal architecture-transforming texture, firmness, tone. The dynamic process continues up to 3–6 months post-treatment.

Because this is genuine tissue regeneration (rather than just surface resurfacing), the improvements tend to look natural, gradual, and robust. By repeating treatment, you accumulate more stable, higher-quality tissue as opposed to transient superficial changes.

You may also enhance this regenerative effect by combining SkinPen® with Polynucleotides and Bioremodellers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microneedling painful?
You’ll likely feel some tingling, prickling or mild discomfort. We use numbing cream to make it more comfortable, and most people tolerate it well.
Some improvements (brightness, minor smoothness) may be visible in 1-2 weeks. Deeper improvements in texture, lines, and scars often appear after multiple sessions (4-6 weeks after first few treatments).
Usually a course of 3-6 sessions is advised, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart, but this depends on your goals and skin condition.
Yes—it often works very well with serums/skin boosters, PRP, or certain light therapies. Combining carefully can amplify results.
Broadly yes, including darker skin tones, since microneedling does not rely on heat or light like lasers; risk of pigmentation is lower compared to some laser treatments. But you’ll need a skin evaluation to confirm suitability.
